Nava Rasas

In Sanskrit, rasa means juice, essence or taste. In the Indian theory of art, rasas refers also to the theory of aesthetic sensibility. In this series I am working with the nine fundamental emotions or flavours of Indian aesthetics. My own experience in this area comes from studying the classical Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam. The nine emotions are Hasya (laughter), Shantha (peace), Adbutha (wonder), Raudra (anger), Veera (heroism), Shringara (love), Bhayanaka (fear), Karuna (sorrow), and Bibhatsa (disgust).
